Mummyyyy!! --- It's overrrrrrrrr =(

Well today is the last lesson for UIR.
It has been a fun subject where we get to blog and do reflections at our own time.
I also learned stuffs that I never thought of too.

Thanks everyone for making this subject enjoyable! =D

My dream holiday

Recently I joined a competition called the ImagineCup. The winning team will be able to go to Paris.
So now the first thing that comes to my mind when I see holiday.... It's Paris! I searched and I found this website. http://www.lastminute.com/site/find/World/Europe/France/Paris/Paris--Holiday.html

It's kind of cool to be able to book such tickets online. The website also has many categories for people to choose from. It even allows people to book cars or hotels over there in advance before even getting the tickets to fly. Haha...

It's a pity it doesn't have many pictures of Paris. And here I am dreaming about Paris..... So I used another search facility to search for pictures of Paris!

Wee here are pictures for me to dream!

Night Paris

Paris seems crowded >.<

Remember this place from The Da Vinci Code??

haha this post seems a little bit not lively like the other posts >.< Maybe it's due to me spending nights after nights rushing my electives.

But well, it's always good to take a break once in a while. Maybe in Paris! =D

Reflections

Practical 4 & 5
Man this is quite an important lab. I had to determine the different keywords to be used for my research, as well as the keyword variations. Had to think a bit on the English side!

Next, I determined the search phrase to be used. And I have to use parenthesis and Boolean operators! Seems fun! I came up with this at the end.

(AIDS OR “HIV virus”) AND ((research OR study) OR ((research) AND (development) OR (development) AND (progress)))

It is actually quite easy if we do it step by step.

After that, I used the query on different search engines, meta search engines, as well as subject directories. It's indeed fascinating to see how the query can affect the number of results, kind of results, or even the time taken to load the result page!

Now I know that some search engines are indeed better than others in terms of their capabilities.

The E-Learning Episode

It's e-learning on Wednesday, and we are all required to answer 2 questions on the discussion board and to blog about it. So here I am, being the lead actor of this e-learning episode!

Like Agnes, here's a screeny of what I had done for the 2 questions.

Mine is not as flashy as someone's. =P

The questions posted are:

1) Briefly explain how Internet has enriched your academic life. Illustrate your answer using at least ONE Internet resource you had learnt in UIR.

2) Comment on the need for "Advocacy" websites.

The internet actually contains a huge pool of information contributed by masses of people. This also meant that not everything from the internet is correct! So how did the Internet actually enriched my academic life? From what I posted, the Internet actually provides me with additional information that is not taught in school. Without the internet, I think I won't be here typing this post now!

1 internet resource that I frequently use is the online forums. Even while not researching, I lurk around forums often too. Forums contain different opinions and views on certain topics from many types of people. That is why the posts are often funny and entertaining.

The 2nd question is about the need for advocacy websites.

Dear Daryl, what is advocacy?

Dear Oranges, in my own words, advocacy is the arguing / giving of opinions about a certain topic.

I find a need for advocacy websites. Whether it's arguing or just pure sharing of opinions, everyone will get to know the different views of a certain topic. This way, different opinions will be known and decision making will then be fair and accurate.

Yep and that marks the end of this episode. Stay tune for more!

Reflections!

Practical 3
In practical 3, we practiced and determine which resource has which purpose. The different purposes of websites are Information, Advocacy, Business/marketing, News, Personal, Entertainment.

So actually websites have all these purposes. I only knew about News, Personal and Entertainment. hmm looks like there's much more to learn.

Next I had to do a post about "If I have $500". That shall be the next post! haha...

The 1st Orange!

This is my first post in this blog and I'm supposed to say something about myself here. So.....

Hello people, I'm Daryl. 19 year old little boy this year who is in the diploma of IT. I'm the one in the middle in my family of 1 father, 1 mother and 2 sisters. Also I love playing badminton!

Kinda weird to change the subject but here it is. Websites that I usually visit.

Forums - Playpark backyard, SAOA forums

Anime - Anijunkie

Manga - Onemanga

Alright here goes for the introduction.

Next, I shall update my practical reflections.

Practical 1
We chose our own research topics and man, that's a whole list of topics! I chose something related to Aids, which seemed interesting. =O haha...

After that, we did the practical sheet. So actually internet resources are things like discussion forums, e-journals, websites, etc. I always thought they were things like google search engines!

We had fun after that using MSN chat to introduce ourselves and got to know each other more, though we knew some of them already =X

Practical 2
We identified personal and organisational websites. TP is an organisational website! haha

Then we had to search for 1 example of each kind of website for our research topic. Also we had to do bibliographies! OH MAN!!! I seriously dread this cos I did it before and it's tough. But well... with all the help in the lecture notes, it's still manageable.

Next time, I can teach people about the different internet resource as well as to be a pro in bibliographies! =D
